Our Elephant Information Network has a new addition: voice announcement systems installed on government buses to alert passengers about elephant presence in the Valparai plateau.

Six such voice announcement systems have been installed on buses that cover six different routes (buses heading to Shekalmudi Puthukadu, Periyakallar, Vellamalai top, Velonie, Injiparai and High Forest), covering most of the plateau.

Coupled with the existing system of crawls on local cable TV channels, bulk SMSes, automated phone calls, and mobile-operated light indicators, this new addition will help reduce surprise encounters with elephants and strengthen human-elephant coexistence in Valparai.

Wildlife corridors are critical in conservation—they connect fragmented forests to create contiguous habitats and keep our wild animal populations healthy.

We are reaching out for funds to develop additional pocket guides for two specific regions: Maharashtra (Marathi/English) and Uttarakhand (Hindi/English). The funds will help us cover the following costs:

Content development
Design and layout
Printing costs for 25,000 copies
Distribution of the material through local partners in the two regions
We have already identified local partners in Maharashtra and Uttarakhand who can help us take these pocket guides to the intended audience (schools and beginner birdwatchers of all ages) and the funds will help us get this project rolling.

Our project received initial funding from a few donors like Wipro Applying Thought in Schools, Cholamandalam and Cotton Casuals Pvt. Ltd., thanks to which we were able to develop the flashcards and a number of different pocket guides. We would like to offer some of our existing materials as a token of appreciation to the contributors to this campaign.

In most villages surrounding our forests, people depend on firewood for their daily energy needs. Harvest of firewood leads to degradation of wildlife habitats. Life isn’t easy for the people who collect it either. Villagers, especially women, face multiple challenges including long arduous walks, physical injury from wildlife and chronic diseases from smoke inhalation. Is there a solution that could benefit both forests and people?

This film follows the journey of some villagers, and a team of conservationists as they wade through fears, apprehensions, and a resistance to change, to work on a solution that benefits all.

We at NCF are involved in a small intervention to support local communities to meet their basic domestic cooking fuel needs by providing Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) stoves to families who reside adjoining a wildlife forest corridor that connects Malai Mahadeshwara Hills Wildlife Sanctuary and Biligirirangaswamy Temple Tiger Reserve in southern India.
